What is a copywriter?

(Hint: it has nothing to do with copyright)

A collage of examples of copywriting.

A copywriter is a professional writer, working with businesses to help them sell their products or services. They’re a type of content writer (which you can read more about here). To get to the nitty-gritty of what this all means, it’s worth digging a little deeper into what ‘copy’ actually is.

So, first off – what is copy?

When we say ‘copy’, we’re simply talking about the words that businesses use to entice clients. This might be a page on your website explaining why you’re the one and only plumber for the job. It could be the mouthwatering text on a restaurant menu that guarantees they’ll order dessert. Or it could be three simple, but strategically placed words on a sports-brand advert: ‘Just do it.’

What all good copy has in common is its ability to engage the reader and convert them into a customer down the line.

Who works with copywriters?

Any business can work with a copywriter. Big companies usually employ a team of copywriters as part of their marketing department, while smaller organisations often work with a freelance copywriter as and when they’re needed.

In the case of a freelance copywriter, that person can become an extension of your team; someone who understands your brand and helps you to perfect your business’ tone of voice.

Why hire a dedicated copywriter?

If you’re a small-business owner, you might not have a marketing officer, never mind a whole department. It’s highly likely you do most things yourself, and that you’ve said to more than one person that you “wear many hats”.

So, why should you relinquish this particular cap to a professional writer? There are lots of answers to that question, but the most important one is simple.

A professional copywriter isn’t worrying about parcelling up deliveries or ordering in parts. They’re not halfway through the drive to the next job or dealing with customers on the phone. Their sole task is to write fantastic copy that sells your business to the world – and they have the experience and know-how to do it well.

When should you hire a copywriter?

A professional copywriter is indispensable at all sorts of times (and not just in the literature round of the pub quiz).

Here are some examples: you want more clients to find your website; you have a print deadline coming up and not enough hours in the day; you’re planning an event or special offer and want to shout about it; you finally got round to making that Instagram account, but don’t know what to say.

The long and short of it, is that where you have something to promote, but don’t have the right words, time or headspace to do it justice, that’s when you should contact a freelance copywriter. Remember, the right words go a long way.
